PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIE  DELVECHIO VAN ARSDALE

Marie Delvechio Van Arsdale was born in New Orleans, Louisiana where, for as long as she can remember, she always enjoyed the arts.  Her first formal education in painting and drawing began at the Newcomb Art School of Tulane University.  She then spent two years in Germany before finally settling down in Texas.

Marie resumed her creative education at Brookhaven Community College where she studied painting with Bill Komodore and discovered a great interest in photography with David Newman. She received the Cecil Wallace Fordham Award in the Visual Arts in 1989 and in 2000 was honored with the Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award.  In order to continue her education she attended the University of North Texas in Denton and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. 

The Concept of creating through photography and then using paint or mixed media techniques to establish a more viable art form allows Marie to respond and create according to her personal feelings.  Her hand-painted photographs are often large and re-examine such issues as photographic size and natural color.  She is now capturing and interpreting many of her photographs digitally.  “Everything seems so solidly traditional… Like real life, where reality lets off and alteration begins is difficult to discern.”  (JR Compton Dallas Art Review)Marie’s work has been shown in a number of galleries and museums, and has won awards in numerous National Juried competitions throughout Texas, the South, New York and California.
